Project Case Study: Bromsgrove

Client/Organization: CRSA

Project Duration: March 2023 – August 2024

Project Value: £60k (PBH Value)

Background

Bromsgrove Loop was life expired and required rerailing and resleepering. The site consisted of 2 underbridges to be upgraded from timber sleepers to concrete and a 200m section of ballast retention due to the steep embankment.

Objectives

To provide a full topographical and gauging survey including track design to AFC and Civils design across the 2 underbridges and section of ballast retention. The project included the requirement for:-
• All aspects of access planning and provision of safety critical staff.
• Topographical and gauging survey including ground investigation surveys for the ballast retention
• Total site length was 2600yards
• Project management undertaken from site surveys through to AFC
• Provision of track hand back engineers during the GI works

Team Involved

Matt Chilton – Survey Manager
Jonny Morrison – Principal Survey Processor
Mike Dawson – Project lead for PBH Rail and CRE for the track design
Jon Livesey – Civils Lead Design
Ben Dugher – PBH Engineering Lead

Challenges

Key Challenges on the project were:-
• Limited access times on site with large freight movements – often resulting in 3hrs access per shift
• Multiple disciplines on site requiring cohesive planning and securing relevant safety critical staff
• Access points for the GI equipment resulting in reduced times for the GI work
• Area of mining subsistence

Design Solution

• Working with the Client BIM Model to review clash detection and ensure gauge clearence.
• Providing revised design to meet scope changes to challenging timescales.
• Detailed review of options carried out with the client and depot operations team to ensure all stabling requirements were met and stabling plan completed.
• Gauging assessments and design reviews with civils and operations team to ensure clearances achieved and risks managed with stepping off the High-Level Gantries onto the train roof.
• Carried out detailed buffer stop risk assessments leading to change in buffer stop solution and significant cost savings.
• Provided design of off-set OLE contact wire position to avoid any clashes with new overhead hoist.

Key Achievements

All milestones for our survey and design deliverables were met. Bi weekly conference calls with the client to highlight potential issues to the programme.
